The numbers show March is the most changeable month in Michigan when we talk about temperatures.
You might just intuitively know this if you’ve lived in Michigan long enough. We all know March can have a painfully changeable weather pattern. Take this next week for example. Over the weekend we will have morning temperatures getting as cold as 15 degrees in southern Lower Michigan. By Wednesday or Thursday afternoon, temperatures will warm to at least 60 degrees.
Now I’m going to be honest and warn you- we are going to have a little math coming up here. Don’t worry. I’ll ease your math anxiety and make it easy for you.
There’s an amazing lack of snow on the ground right now

The snow cover today is only there because of our weekend snowstorm in northern Lower Michigan.

The stats below show the western Great Lakes region is 39 percent covered with snow. The snow cover isn’t on average very deep, with an average depth of only one inch. The deepest snow cover now is 16 inches.

We can compare this year to last year at this time. Last year had 22 percent more ground covered with snow. The average amount of snow on the ground last year was over seven inches. Some places had three feet of snow on the ground last year.
