White Castle fast-food chain celebrates a century in business

An infamous Detroit moment in White Castle history came with the movie   A Very Merry Harold and Kumar Christmas. Several of the scenes were shot in metro Detroit, including at the Somerset Collection in Troy and throughout downtown. It was the third movie featuring the stoner characters Harold and Kumar, who cemented the hamburger chain s pop culture status with the film Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.   Fast-food chain White Castle hit the centenarian mark Wednesday. The burger chain known for its small, square hamburgers, commonly referred to as sliders, is celebrating its 100th birthday all year long. The Ohio-based chain, which began in 1921,  is marking the occasion with special events, promotions and new menu items. Billy Ingram and Walter Anderson founded the chain and started out by selling small square hamburgers for 5 cents in Wichita, Kansas. Years later, Ingram bought out Anderson s share of the business and moved the chain to Columbus, Ohio.
