Hunkering down as Law Enforcement swept the campus. Now, when shots rang out, broke out at Skyline High School in the oakland hills, the campus immediately went into lockdown as students ran for cover and hid in classrooms. Oakland police chp officers and Alameda County sheriffs deputies all responded to the school at about 1130 tuesday morning. Authorities confirmed that shots were fired, but nobody was hurt. Jose matesmuchin, the 17 year old senior, says she took refuge in the closet of a french classroom. She has a brother who is a freshman. She quickly called him to make sure he was safe. The janitor had opened the closet for him. The custodian, mr. Lee, i think he was doing kind of what he was trying to do. And hes i mean, only meeting him a couple times. Last month, this photo of residents of an assisted living facility in texas, who were trapped in waist deep water went viral. As these recent disasters made clear, Older Americans are particularly vulnerable, before, during and even after a storm. In fact, when Hurricane Katrina slammed into the gulf coast 12 years ago, more than half of those who died were seniors.
