Dr. Valerie Arkoosh, a career physician and medical school professor who jumped into politics during President Barack Obama’s push for health care reforms, has become the latest entrant in the growing field to replace U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey for a term starting in January 2023.
Toomey has said he won’t seek a third term next year. The race to succeed him is seen as one of a handful that is going to determine majority control of the Senate - now at 50-50 with Vice President Kamala Harris giving the Democrats the working majority - for the second half of President Joe Biden’s term.
