Where to find the best chilaquiles for breakfast in Mexico City

Where to find the best chilaquiles for breakfast in Mexico City Ubiquitous across Mexico, chilaquiles are one of the most popular savoury breakfasts. Here are five of the best spots to try them. By Liliana López Sorzano 9 Apr 2021, 08:00 BST Built in the early Colonial period, Santa Catarina church in Coyoacán, Mexico City, is often festooned with multicoloured flags.  Photograph by Getty Images Chilaquiles are one of Mexico s most popular breakfasts. Totopos (crunchy fried corn tortilla triangles) are doused in either a green tomatillo sauce (salsa verde) or spicy red tomato sauce (salsa roja), and then topped with cream, sliced onions and crumbled queso fresco (a local mild white cheese). But there’s no right or wrong when it comes to the toppings; the dish’s beauty lies in its versatility, with variations including fried eggs, shredded chicken, beef, avocado, chorizo, melted cheese and more.

Food writer Reem Kassis on the flavours of the Middle East and beyond

, Updated 15 Mar 2021, 16:28 GMT Reem Kassis is the author of The Arabesque Table: Contemporary Recipes from the Arab World. Photograph by Dan Perez Photograph by Dan Perez The Arabesque Table? I wanted to capture the evolving and cross-cultural Arab table, and I realised that to understand this modern way of eating, one had to understand the culinary history of the Arab world. At its core, food is more closely tied to language and religion than arbitrary political boundaries. I wanted to use the history of our cuisine to demonstrate how food often transcends the boxes we put it in.  Can you explain the idea behind the title?

Editors' picks: 10 snacks to try from around the world

, Updated 12 Feb 2021, 12:35 GMT Nothing says Portugal quite like a pasteis de nata: a wobbly egg custard encased in layers of buttery pastry that manages to be both crunchy and soft at the same time. Photograph by Getty Images 1. Fried peanut butter and banana sandwich Too many of these and it’s a coronary waiting to happen but, once in a blue moon, it’s a finger-licking joy. This decadent slice of Americana was Elvis Presley’s preferred sandwich (although his contained bacon, too), and is famously served at Gladys’ Diner at Graceland, the King’s former home in Tennessee. While I’ve never been to the Memphis mansion myself, I discovered the recipe via Nigella Lawson, and it’s worryingly easy to make: spread a liberal amount of smooth peanut butter on one slice of white bread and mashed banana on the other, sandwich together and fry in butter until golden on both sides, then sprinkle with sugar. It’s even easier to eat.

10 travel experiences for 2021, chosen by the editors of National Geographic Traveller (UK)

, Updated 23 Dec 2020, 12:16 GMT Huge skies and big, empty landscapes don’t get more superlative than in Namibia, where Africa specialist &Beyond offers the chance to admire the night skies with a resident astronomer. Photograph by Getty Images Connor McGovern, commissioning editor, National Geographic Traveller I’ve become far too well acquainted with the interior of my London flat this year, so it’s no wonder I’m longing for huge skies and big, empty landscapes. They don’t get more superlative than in Namibia, where Africa specialist &Beyond offers the chance to admire the night skies with a resident astronomer in the Sossusvlei Private Desert Reserve. Zero light pollution makes for world-class celestial sightseeing in this corner of Southern Africa, and all that desert seclusion and open space will make my home seem as far away as the stars twinkling above.
