World-Famous or Legendary Muskie “Hotspots” – Part XI

Had a request, and since actual “hotspots” have been growing dim, I’ll honor a request and discuss a lake that created a furor in the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s and beyond. We are going to be talking about Giant muskie catches from “The Goon”, aka Wabigoon Lake in Northwestern Ontario, Canada, near Dryden.

While “The Goon” has always had big muskies, it was a relative “unknown” for a few reasons. First off, it was overshadowed by its neighbor lake to the west, Eagle Lake, which produced a world and two Canadian records in 1939 and 1940. Also, depending on the wind direction, the “smell” from the local wood industry and the light chocolate milk color of the water seemed to turn folks off; that is until Craig Dawson put “The Goon” on the map with several giant muskies from there, practically

World-Famous or Legendary Muskie “Hotspots” – Part VII

Where will the next World Record muskie come from? My good friend and fellow author, Bill Hamblin (Billy and I co-wrote a five-year series of “Musky Hunter’s Almanacs” from 1996 thru 2000), believes it will come from Georgian Bay, where he guided for several years. When I started writing this series on muskie “Hotspots”, I reached out to him for multiple reasons, least of which is his vast knowledge of Georgian Bay and the Legendary “Hotspots” he knows and has fished. These facts were borne out to me once again as I re-read his recently published (2015), GREAT book on fishing the Bay and one man’s story of spending “120 Days” of a single season chasing a record muskie there. The cover of his book is a photograph of a point of land in “Blackstone Harbour” (Canadian spelling),so we will have a look there. According to Bill,

Let us now return to the
Turtle-Flambeau Flowage in Wisconsin, and cover “Hotspot” number three there. I’ll again note that the two largest verified muskies caught from this log-laden Pond, both over 50-pounds, were caught by women! This second one will likely make us anglers wonder again if we are doing the right things.

Dollar Island is a relatively small island in the big basin on the Flambeau side of the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage near the old river channel.
