Third meeting held of Advisory Group on planning for state examinations 2021
A meeting of the advisory group of stakeholders on planning for the state examinations 2021 was held online today, Friday 22 January.
The group includes representatives of students, parents, teachers, school leadership and management bodies, the State Examinations Commission (SEC), the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and the Department of Education, including the National Educational Psychological Service.
The meeting was attended by the Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD.
At today’s meeting, the group received a presentation from the student representatives, the Irish Secondary Students Union, on their recently published report on the 2021 State Examinations and return to school. Leaving Cert students affected by Covid may be given a second chance to sit papers in July.
The Department of Education is pushing ahead with plans to run the State exams in June, and says it is the ”firm intention” of Education Minister Norma Foley that they take place.
But they have to factor in the possibility of candidates who may be ill with Covid, or who are isolating because they are a ‘close contact’, and who will not be able to sit some of their papers.
While the imminent arrival of vaccines is an additional tool in the battle against the disease, it is anticipated that the infection will continue to pose a risk in June.
Leaving Cert oral exams could be held online or during Easter Extra choice in exam papers for candidates in light of potential disruption to school year

The possibility of holding Leaving Cert oral and practical exams online or holding them during the Easter holidays are among a number of options being considered by the State Examinations Commission.
It is also understood that education authorities will announce details of extra choice to be given to candidates shortly in a number of key subjects in the summer written exams.
This is due to concerns that students affected by disruption to the school year will not have time to complete the curriculum.
