former president trump indicted today for his efforts to overturn the january 6th election. on the face of the new charges, trump s allies on the hill are coming fast and furiously to his defense. i want to bring in our melanie zan ona, political reporter. they re saying they don t have any reason to read this indictment because they already know what they think. yeah, well actually, republicans have been preparing their response for weeks. even before seeing the scope of the charges. and in some case, erin, they have been directly coordinating with donald trump himself about how best to defend him. donald trump has spoken in recent days to some of his allies including elise stefanik trying to strategize over a messaging plan here. i m also told he sent talking points arguing that trump was only consulting his attorneys in the lead-up to january 6th. and now some on the right are calling to defund special counsel jack smith, though that would be dead on arrival in the
factually wrong. this indictment shows there is one standard of justice, that no one is above the law. take a step back from politics. this is about the serious most historical moment in a long, long time where a sitting president tried to overturn election on the basis of a lie. this lays it out. folks want to engage in magical thinking and not read this indictment as a matter of pride. they are engaging in political ignorance, but it doesn t make it right. and we shouldn t dignify. there is an emerging theory on the right tonight about that even people who believe january 6th was horrible that trump violated his oath of office, whatever, that it s possible to believe that he was totally wrong and amoral and shouldn t hold the presidency again, but that you don t also have to believe that he should have been charged with a crime. i m starting to see people on the right tonight parse it out. i don t agree with january 6th. i think he was wrong. this indictment seems thin.
