Tulip Time Festival 2021 Winding Down

Tulip Time Festival 2021 Winding Down By Gary Stevens HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The 91 st Tulip Time Festival is winding down. Although there are no Dutch Dancers or parades due to COVID 19 health concerns, visitors from near and far have flocked to the Tulip City to see the star of the show in all its brilliant glory at various locations in and around Holland. “There may even be some special things that are showing up this weekend that aren’t even on the books,” Mayor Nathan Bocks disclosed. “Keep your eyes open this weekend and keep your ears open, for Tulip Time is always coming up with great new ideas, great things in the future that hopefully we’ll be able to have this weekend. Next year, a full Tulip Time – everything we’ve ever known in the past, and maybe some new things!”

City staff tells council they can be 'surgical' with provisions in UDO

UDO, which is 330 pages in its current form, includes 14 articles, each pertaining to certain subjects like zoning, lighting, landscaping and others.  Among the most contentious issues for city residents are proposed changes to the single-family residential (R-1) zone district, renamed Low Density Residential in the UDO, and the Traditional Residential Neighborhood zone district, called Traditional Neighborhood Residential in the UDO. Planners say the goal of the changes is to slowly increase housing stock in Holland and allow for a greater variety of housing options.  The UDO proposes changes to those neighborhoods to make it legal in LDR to convert a single-family home to a duplex, as long as the property owner lives in one of the units and the footprint of the home does not change, and to make more properties in the TNR zone district eligible to construct multi-family housing.

My Take: UDO by the numbers

My Take: UDO by the numbers By Nathan Bocks After 2.5 years, dozens of meetings, hours of public debate, hundreds of public comments, the nine members of the planning commission, elected by the people of Holland or appointed by multiple mayors, voted 9-0 to recommend the consolidation and modernization of Holland’s zoning and planning ordinances dating back to the 1940s.  I want to thank the planning commissioners, city staff and the consultants who have been working diligently to create this proposal.  I want to thank the members of the public who made their voices heard. This has been a great example of citizen engagement.
