05/16/21 AT 7:20 AM
National Honor Our LGBT Elders day is observed on May 16 every year to pay tribute to thousands of people who have paved a way for the LGBT community to obtain rights and gain social acceptance.
The day reminds people to honor and recognize the predecessors who worked hard for several decades to bring equality through legislation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities.
In 2015, a person named Nate Sweeney founded Honor Our LGBT Elders Day to recognize the contributions and leadership of the older members of the LGBT community.
Redding officers identified in deadly shooting on Cypress Avenue Bridge
The Redding Police Department on Wednesday released the names of the three officers involved in a fatal police shooting last month.
The officers involved in the Feb. 7 shooting were officers Jeremiah Kasinger, Nate Sweeney and Brett Leonard, who also was involved in two prior fatal shootings in the past three years, according to Redding police Sgt. Danny Smetak.
The three officers fired on Brooke Leann Blair, 27, of Redding after she pulled a replica handgun from her waistband, police said shortly after the shooting.
The incident, as described by police, began shortly before 11:30 a.m. Feb. 7 on the south side of the Cypress Avenue Bridge.
