The sun shone down on the Auckland Hearts at New Plymouth’s stunning Pukekura Park as they claimed their second victory of the Super Smash in a game that came down to the wire. Luck was on the side of Hearts captain Lauren Down. She won the toss and elected to bat against the Central Hinds. Down delivered a captain’s knock, carrying her bat throughout the innings, finishing with 64 not out off 63 balls. It’s a return to form for the captain who brought up her 50 in the 15th over with an elegant four through the covers. In her 50th game for the side, her luck continued when she was dropped in the 16th over.
Green and Kerr were also a key part of a collective bowling effort, claiming two wickets apiece as Thamsyn Newton led the way with 3-23. After being sent in by Wellington, the Central openers almost survived the first five overs before Kerr removed Jess Watkin for 12. The Blaze attack then turned the screws on their opponents, taking wickets at regular intervals with Natalie Dodd the only other batter to reach double figures, top-scoring with 20. The Canterbury Magicians have been handed their first defeat of this season’s domestic one-day competition thanks to the stunning exploits of Wellington Blaze 14-year-old Kate Chandler. In their round five Hallyburton Johnstone Shield match at Christchurch s Hagley Oval on Saturday, the top of the table Cantabs were hammered by eight wickets after being skittled for 155. That was chiefly thanks to leg-spinner Chandler snaring 5-41 off 9.1 overs, as the hosts collapsed from 117-4 at the 34-over mark, to be all out in 46.1 after being sent in.
