There was no avoiding the When they Cry: Higurashi Naku Koro ni franchise for any respectable otaku in 2006. The story concept is simple: a young boy, Keiichi Maebara, moves out into the sticks with his parents and quickly befriends a group of cute, funny girls at his school. But Hinamizawa is carrying a lot of dark and twisted secrets, and when a grisly murder is uncovered, Keiichi is forced to grapple with how much he trusts his friends and the people around him.
We get some answers and a handful of allusions in this week s episode of
Higurashi. Featherine/Hanyū speaks cryptically about having met Satoko before under the names Vier, Mitsuyo, and Anomalous Spinal Cord Specimen LD3105 and mentions a land of the red sea.
Since what takes place in this episode is pretty straightforward, lend me your patience while I do some Higu-sleuthing. Yes, we re talking about witch lore again. So the bit about Lambdadelta s alternate identity I brought up last time mentioned that she was originally assumed to have some connection to Miyo because of the kanji in her name. To be more specific, Ryukishi07 likes wordplay and numbers are a reoccurring theme. Miyo s given name is written 三四 which can also be read as 34. That number reappears in several places, including in the name Featherine calls Satoko, Mitsuyo. Lambdadelta is also 34 in Greek. The repetition of this number suggests some kind of relationship between Miyo Takano and Satok
This episode hones in on Satoko s continuing isolation from Rika, her attempts to course-correct, and ultimately opening up the door that will lead to Rika s torturous loop. Now, my knowledge of St. Lucia Academy is limited to Shion going there; I ve seen in the comments that it s also mentioned in
Umineko, where its darker side is more evident, but I didn t expect the hoity-toity girls school to have an
underground prison. That s where Satoko ends up after her attempt to lay a trap with washbasins ends up actually injuring someone.
The scene is reflective of the major differences between Rika and Satoko. Rika has had to live as a child for a century, so it s understandable that she s enthusiastic at playing a fancy lady at St. Lucia that gives her a chance to feel mature for once.
