KABUL: General Boris Vsevolodovich Gromov crossed the Oxus River as the last Soviet troop to leave Afghanistan on February 14, 1989 and to end a nine-year of military invasion of Afghanistan.
13,000 of 100,000 Soviet soldiers serving in the Afghan war were killed and 35,000 others wounded and maimed. The war also took hundreds of thousands victims from Afghans, while millions fled the country.
This was the intensive part of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States with their allies.
Although the Soviet Union ended invasion of Afghanistan, but the war continues till now, with the Soviet s old rival the US having troops on the ground since a 2001 invasion in the pretext of war on terror that pushed the Taliban out.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned the attack and accused the Taliban of stalling peace talks by once again escalating the violence. “They have show that they don’t believe in peace,” Ghani said.
Elsewhere in Kabul, a sticky bomb attached to a car exploded, killing another government employee, Faramarz later said. According to the foreign ministry, it was their car and one of the ministry’s drivers was killed in that attack in the Macrorayan neighborhood.
Also Tuesday, four police officers were killed and a fifth was wounded when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in western Herat province’s Zenda Jan district, said Wahid Qatali, the provincial governor.

President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday said that if the current opportunity for peace in Afghanistan turns out to be lost, and Afghanistan plunges toward an uncertain future, the consequences of such a scenario will cause severe harm to regional and global peace and stability.
“The peril, Mr. Prime Minister, lies in misunderstanding this moment peace in Afghanistan is within grasp if parties and their backers in the Taliban embrace a true political solution, but Afghans will not submit to surrender. It must be understood that our heroic security forces are not defeated and neither have we lost our will or capacity for serving our people,” Ghani stated during a virtual meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Local officials in Badakhshan province confirmed a 60-year-old man hanged himself in the Jurm district of Badakhshan province on Saturday evening.
Confirming the incident, Badakhshan governor spokesman Nik Mohammad Nazari said a delegation has been sent to the area to investigate the incident.
He said details will be shared with the media later.
The man was reportedly a resident of Dashtak village.
Meanwhile police spokesman Sanaullah Rouhani apologized for having given out information earlier that might not have been correct.
He said earlier the man committed suicide after having tried to borrow money from several relatives to buy food for his children overnight, but no one responded to his request.
