Print article Nine great apes at the San Diego Zoo are the first nonhuman primates to receive an experimental COVID-19 vaccine, zoo officials said Thursday. Four orangutans and five bonobos have been vaccinated so far, with the zoo planning to immunize another three bonobos and a gorilla soon. These species, along with chimpanzees, are the closest cousins to humans, placing them at risk of contracting a virus that has spread rapidly from person to person. Case in point: In mid-January, the zoo’s Safari Park reported that its troop of eight gorillas developed COVID-19 after exposure to a keeper who had the virus, even though the employee had no symptoms and wore protective equipment.

The San Diego Zoo has given nine apes an experimental coronavirus vaccine developed by Zoetis, a major veterinary pharmaceuticals company.
In January, a troop of gorillas at the zoo’s Safari Park tested positive for the virus. All are recovering, but even so, the zoo requested help from Zoetis in vaccinating other apes. The company provided an experimental vaccine that was initially developed for pets and is now being tested in mink.

Why Great Apes Are Getting COVID Vaccines at a U.S. Zoo
On 3/5/21 at 12:17 PM EST
Great apes at a California zoo have been given an experimental coronavirus vaccine following an outbreak earlier this year.
Nine apes, five bonobos and four orangutans, at San Diego Zoo (SDZ) were given two doses of an experimental vaccine in January and February in order to protect them against the disease, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) said on Wednesday.
The doses, developed by the veterinary pharmaceutical company Zoetis, were tailored for animal usage and administered to the great apes after zoo officials suspected gorillas became sick after coming into contact with an asymptomatic zookeeper who later tested positive for the virus.
