Shelly Asquith elected new chair of Stop the War Coalition

THE Stop the War Coalition elected Shelly D Asquith as its new chair at its first steering committee meeting since the 2021 AGM on Tuesday night. Ms Asquith “has been a dedicated anti-war campaigner as part of Stop the War for many years and we’re very excited to have her at the forefront of our work,” the peace campaign said in a statement. She succeeds Murad Qureshi, who stepped down after five years. The meeting discussed campaigning priorities including the dispatch of a new aircraft carrier strike group to the South China Seas in what national officer Chris Nineham called “a post-colonial fantasy, but a dangerous fantasy, because the Tories believe it and are pumping large amounts of money and munitions into it.”

Britain overtakes Russian military spending — but onl

Britain faces strike action from exhausted healthcare workers angry at a “pitiful” 1% pay rise despite winning praise for treating thousands of coronavirus patients. Their frustration comes as a new study shows the UK government has increased spending on the military to $61.5-billion last year, up from $54.8-billion in 2019. The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) said this means Britain now has the fourth-largest defence budget in the world, ahead of Russia, France and Germany. Russia is 70 times the size of the UK and has more than twice as many inhabitants.  The IISS said the Russian defence budget for 2020 was $60.6-billion, down $1-billion from 2019.
