Regardless of whether Gov. Kay Ivey opts to extend a mask mandate or to follow the lead of Texas and Mississippi in dropping it, one thing is clear: A thaw has come to coastal Alabama.
The floodgates are open, with a steady stream of concerts, festivals and other public events on the books for March and April. Many still advertise social distancing and other hygienic precautions, and individual venues could require or encourage mask use even if the state says it’s not mandatory. Needless to say, many people may still opt to avoid public gatherings or to wear masks regardless of what’s required.
