MANILA – Filipino athlete Hidilyn Diaz made history after winning the country’s very first Olympic gold medal as she competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics weightlifting competition, July 26.
Diaz won with a 97-kilogram in the snatch and an Olympic record of 127-kilogram in the clean and jerk, for a total of 224kg.
“Thank you so much for believing in me. When there are times when I wanted to quit because of all the challenges I had to go through, but I and the rest of the Filipinos were able to get through,” Diaz told ABSCBN reporter Gretchen Ho in an interview.

TOKYO, July 26 (Xinhua) Hidilyn Diaz has become the first ever Olympic gold medal winner representing the Philippines after triumphing in the women s weightlifting 55kg at the Tokyo Olympic Games here on Monday. The Philippines has won three silver and seven bronze at the Olympics before Monday, and the country s gold medal drought was ended by four-time Olympian Diaz with 97kg in the snatch, both new Olympic records of 127kg in the clean and jerk and 224kg in total. After other contestants confirmed their results, it became a head-to-head between Liao and Diaz. Liao, current world record holder in the clean and jerk and total, managed a 126kg third attempt, but Diaz improved it to 127kg in the final lift throughout the match.

The 30-year-old, who won silver at Rio 2016, smashed her personal best to see off world record holder Liao Qiuyun of China at the Tokyo International Forum. Before Diaz s triumph, the Philippines had won three silver and seven bronze medals at the Olympic Games. I don t know what to say. It s a dream come true. I just want to say that we Filipinos are strong. We Filipinos can compete here at the Olympics. We can do it, said a high-spirited Diaz, also sharing her advice towards the Philippines younger generations.
