so for president trump who says we don t talk about this stuff, i certainly, as you know, talk about it an awful lot. 22,000. may go back later today. it s what we call flirting with 22,000. flirting. yeah. thank you ali velshi. starting to show the strain. there are going to be times when i disagree with him, and when i do, i usually state that very clearly, as well. populism is, you know, you can win elections with it. it s popular. it s populism. but it s not a governing philosophy. we re here trying to do our duty. i m going to do what i think is right. and sometimes that means i m going to be agreeing with the president and sometimes it means that i m not. and, of course, it s more than just health care with the president late this morning slamming congress as he signed that sanctions bill into law. msnbc s garrett haake on capitol hill with the latest. and we re joined by former congressman, tom davis, a virginia republican. garrett, let me start with you and
next is some effort to rallies votes around the february 8th date. i think it will turn into a conversation whether or not, senator schumer said on the floor, president trump is in a position to say yes. it s not because the democrats won t give donald trump what he wants, it s because they will and he just can t get there. his own internal hardliners are saying know. schumer thought he had a deal kind of with trump and john kelly called him afterwards and said no. tom cotton and republican senators are vetoing it. the real question here is, is a deal possible? will trump stand up to the right in the white house, on capitol hill and reach a deal with the democrats? it s hard to know that right now. let me ask you this, adam. as somebody you were a deputy chief of staff to senator harry reid. a lot of attention on senator chuck schumer tonight. the republicans have called this the schumer shutdown. schumer in his speech after the vote failed talked about how this is all on the presi
urging you, please take yes for an answer. the way things went today, the way you turned from a bipartisan deal, it s almost as if you were rooting for a shutdown. and now we ll have one. and the blame should crash entirely on president trump s shoulders. this will be called the trump shutdown. because there is no one, no one who deserves the blame for the position we find ourselves in more than president trump. joining us now, an hour into this shutdown, msnbc s garrett haake on capitol hill who has been really trying to interpret this as it s been going along. garrett, what is the latest for people who have not been following this as closely as we have, what has happened and what is likely to happen? reporter: sure, ali, if you just turned on your television, congratulations, your government has shut down.
the capitol, but in new york city without membership present. democrats don t love that. you mentioned the bloomberg story. good news for democrats who want to keep this investigation can going. it s worth pointing out despite mybest efforts i ve not been able to confirm that story said to. we ll find out, i guess, how much further democrats are able to push that probe in the house. i should point out that in his year-end press conference just now mitch mcconnell was asked about the probe going on in the senate, the senate intelligence committee. he said he has no interest in seeing that investigation stopped on any kind of artificial timeline. he hopes for a bipartisan report to come out of it and essentially richard burr and mark warner will tell us when they are done with that effort. garrett, thank you. chat with you later. msnbc s garrett haake on capitol hill. and today marked the first major legislative win for the president after a failed attempt to repeal and replace obama
before we make any determination. you know, we were going to talk to democrat senator chris van hollen, who we booked to begin tonight s show discussing leadership issues facing democrats in addition to other topics like taxes, but he canceled on us just before the show citing a scheduling issue. i m joined now by msnbc s garrett haake on capitol hill and my colleague in alabama where roy moore returns to the campaign trail later tonight. not what we don t like to see you guy, but thank you for coming on short notice after van hollen canceled on us. garrett, we have a number of issues, i guess, in congress right now. al franken is back at work and nancy pelosi is standing by john conyers, and the president standing by roy moore. who should be believed?
