Wasp Wipeout: Effort to eradicate pests begins on Auckland's Motutapu Island

“We have started getting complaints all across Auckland recently,” said Manikantan. Bernadette Basagre/Stuff Significant number of complaints have led to the Wasp Wipeout campaign to begin in Auckland. Rangitoto Island, Motutapu Island and Motuihe Island are wasp hotspots in the Auckland region, along with the Waitākere Ranges. Wasps are invasive pests that are endangering New Zealand’s biodiversity as they compete for native bird food and attack lizards. Manikantan said that wasps also attack “chicklets because they can’t fly and have liquid on them when they are born”. Liz St George/Stuff The first Wasp Wipeout campaign in Auckland begins in Motutapu Island.

America's Cup Rialto: March 10 - Italy creates another page of Cup history

Most of the previous Italian Challenges have been of participation rather than victory. The first win was in 1992 in San Diego, with the Paul Cayard skippered/Raoul Gardini backed Il Moro di Venezia winning the second race, by just a 3 second margin. The Italian 12 Metre Azzurra got Italy into the Cup in 1983, winning 24 of 49 races sailed in the Challenger Selection Series laying down a marker both for Italy s participation in the America s Cup, and dragging the Italian population to emote over the America s Cup. Then, as now and always, the Italian entries have always epitomized style. Who could forget those beautiful blue 12 metre hulls? However winning is not the Italians forte, with just two wins in a Match from almost 30 years of America s Cup participation.

Sea meditation and a giant slide: The new floating day retreat on Auckland Harbour

Anastas Arnaudov The small group of women on SailFit s first NZ retreat got stuck into high-intensity interval training, yoga, a wellbeing workshop, watersports and sea meditation . Credit: Anastas Arnaudov I’m a big fan of wellness retreats, but they’re not always a bundle of laughs. People tend to sign up for them because they’re stressed out, anxious, exhausted, unhappy or facing a major dilemma or crisis, so it makes sense that they’re often fairly sober affairs (in some cases literally). But if there’s one thing I learned from a new day retreat on Auckland Harbour, it’s that you should not underestimate the curative properties of a giant, inflatable slide. Particularly when it’s whizzing you off an 81-foot motor yacht into cobweb-clearing cool water off the coast of one of the Hauraki Gulf’s hidden island gems.
