The 61-year-old, who rose to fame after appearing on state television on November 15, 2017, to announce the military coup that overthrew longtime President Robert Mugabe, died at a private hospital in the capital, Harare, days after testing positive for coronavirus. Moyo was the third cabinet minister to have died of Covid-19 in recent weeks amid a major surge in the pandemic (Transport Minister Joel Biggie Matiza and Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Ellen Gwaradzimba were the other two) and the fourth in total (Agriculture Minister Perrance Shiri passed away in July).

Aeneas Chigwedere, 81, also previously served as governor of Mashonaland East province Jeffrey Moyo   | 22.01.2021 HARARE  The 81-year-old passed away at his farm near Marondera town in the Mashonaland East province. David Musabayana, Zimbabwe’s deputy foreign affairs minister, also confirmed Chigwedere’s death and extended condolences to the family. An eminent historian, Chigwedere was a traditional chief in his native area in Mashonaland East and previously served as governor of the province. “The educator, the historian, rest in power former education minister Aeneas Chigwedere,” Elias Mambo, publisher of news outlet Zim Morning Post, said on Twitter. The pandemic has claimed the lives of several politicians in Zimbabwe, including Foreign Minister Sibusiso Moyo, who died of COVID-19 complications earlier this week.

Zimbabwe extends countrywide lockdown until February 15

Zimbabwe on Friday extended the duration of nationwide lockdown measures until Feb. 15 to curtail the further spread of the novel coronavirus. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga delivered a live address on the public Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) on the latest extension of the level-four lockdown. Chiwenga, who is also the country s health minister, made the address at the country s Health Ministry in the capital Harare amid a spike in coronavirus-related deaths and rising infections. President Emmerson Mnangagwa had imposed a 30-day national lockdown on Jan. 5 after a spike in COVID-19 cases in the country. Zimbabwe has reported 32,646 coronavirus cases so far and 1,160 deaths due to COVID-19, along with 24,419 recoveries from the disease.
