“We look at Monterey Bay as a whole, instead of looking at the ocean by itself and the land by itself,” Lanting said. “Our vision is that sea and land influence each other here in the Monterey Bay in a unique way.”
"The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary was originally nominated to cover 7,600 square miles from the southern boundary of the Monterey Bay sanctuary in northern San Luis Obispo County south to Point Conception," writes Dan Haifley in a Guest Commentary. "The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has proposed a smaller area excluding Cambria to Morro Bay to accommodate infrastructure for planned offshore wind production to the sanctuary’s northwest, but a final decision has yet to be made."
The annual Fall Harvest Festival is from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the UC Santa Cruz farm. There will be an apple pie contest, apple pressing, hands-on gardening workshops, kids’ activities and live music. Plus, local food vendors including Adorable French Bakery and The Pesce Veggie will have items for sale.
