one is that the trump administration is going to go way beyond what the supreme court said. so it makes no sense to say that if you re a stepsister of a muslim family in america then the ban doesn t apply to you but if you re grandmother then the ban does apply to you. that makes no logical sense and i believe there will be a whole series of lawsuits that now happen because of how restrictive the trump administration has interpreted the ban. and secondly, nothing changes the harmful bigotry and anti-muslim sentiment that this ban sends out to the entire world. congressman, you re from california. there are a number of sanctuary cities in your state. the house is about to vote on two bills involving sanctuary cities. they said they re trying to bolster immigration enforcement. yesterday the president hosted families whose loved ones were killed by undocumented immigrants. we saw them campaign on this. my question to you is are republicans trying to win this in the court of public opin

restrictions the supreme court placed on the travel ban when it ruled in a partial state earlier this week. let s bring in democratic congressman ted lew of california, a member of the judiciary and foreign affairs committee. thanks for joining us. thank you, katy. what s your initial reaction or biggest concern once this travel ban goes into effect? well, let s fist understand that the supreme court did not issue a final ruling on that travel ban. it hasn t even hear the case. that will happen in the fall. what they did do is uphold part of the injunction and let part of it go through, which is that if you don t have a bona fide relationship with someone in america, then the ban right now will take effect and that will affect people such as, for example, grandparents of muslim families, and that is unfortunate. so what is your biggest concern with how this is going to go in effect besides laying out what is in that ban? two concerns.

the supreme court said if they have a relationship with an entity in the u.s., what the government is now saying is well, that doesn t simply mean that some organization in the u.s. is sponsoring a refugee. it must mean something different but they haven t yet said what the something different is. so they say they re still going to have to work that out and they have a couple of days to figure that out before this kicks in for all refugees in the early july. hallie, what s the white house saying about this today? and is there any clarification about why they think a grandmother is not a close enough relation? nothing on that yet, but i imagine in the next hour when we hear from sara huckabee sanders in the press briefing that may come up. she might also refer that to doj or dhs. the white house has framed what happened today as a victory for them. they believe it s the implementation of one of the president s crucial priorities on the campaign trail that is now being enacted even i

since the supreme court allowed at least part of it to go forward. why is is president so focused on that and not necessarily focused on what you guys are doing in the house and the senate and that is russia and iran sanctions that are making their way through congress? that s a long question, but i just read a great piece in politico basically how the press missed everything having to do with the trump win. you re asking me why is he pursuing this, because that s what the american people wanted and what that s what he won on. and it s a huge 70%, 80% issue and we have five bills going through the house, goodlatte s bill s going through the judiciary on immigration reform, everify, internal moves that we can make to help on those issues. and they are 70%, 80 peshs issues so, that s why we re pursuing it, to keep the country safe, keep the american workers wages going up. it s an easy case to make. the iran sanctions, the
