The U.S. Coast Guard has foiled an attempt by a group of Cuban citizens to illegally migrate to the United States by interdicting them at sea off the Florida Keys.
The crews of the U.S. Coast Guard cutters Charles David Jr. and Richard Etheridge returned 143 migrants to Cuba on Tuesday, Dec. 27, following numerous interdictions off Florida’s coast.
Cubans are arriving in the Florida Keys in rickety boats in larger numbers than a year ago, the U.S. Border Patrol reports. Between Sunday and Tuesday alone, more than 120 people from the island landed in the Keys on handmade boats.
