Three senators arrested in Balkh for allegedly accepting $40,000 in bribes

(Last Updated On: December 28, 2020) National Security Directorate (NDS) and the Attorney General’s Office confirmed Monday that three senior senators, from the Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament), were arrested in Balkh province and have been charged with accepting bribes.    In a joint statement issued by the NDS and AGO, the security organizations said the senators have been accused of accepting $40,000 in bribes and have been transferred to Kabul.     Addressing a press conference earlier Monday in Mazar-e-Sharif, Balkh Governor Mohammad Farhad Azimi said the three senators had been sent to the province to inspect revenue offices but that based on intelligence gathered the delegation had been arrested.

Balkh and Sarkhandarya governors made statements to the effect at the second conference on strengthening Uzbek-Afghan cooperation in areas of trade and culture in Mazar-i-Sharif. The Sarkhandarya governor said his country was willing to expand economic and trade ties with Afghanistan. He added the two sides discussed an agreement on creating an economic zone in Sarkhandarya and initial work of the project had begun.

Joint Market is Being Created Between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan 2020-12-23 بازارمشترک میان کشورهای افغانستان و ازبکستان ایجاد می شود Mazar-e-Sharif (BNA) The governors of Balkh and Sarkhan, Uzbekistan, agreed to establish a joint market between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan in Sarkhan, Uzbekistan. According to BNA local correspondent in a meeting attended by Balkh Governor Mohammad Farhad Azimi and Uzbek Governor Sorkhanm Babalov Toure in Mazar-e-Sharif, the two sides agreed to establish a common and free market on the border between the two countries. The practical work of that market will start next month. At the meeting, the two sides discussed trade problems, solutions to the existing economic challenges between the two countries and said that the construction of this market will take into account all medical, tourism and commercial facilities.
