The Emergency Broadband Benefit, administered through the Federal Communications Commission, gives eligible households a $50-a-month subsidy that can be used to pay for broadband service, as well as a one-time $100 payment toward a device to connect to the internet.

The agency is also partnering with the US Department of Education to get the word out to households that have students unable to access their education because they don t have broadband or don t have a device to get online.  The $50-a-month broadband subsidy and one-time $100 payment toward a device to connect to the internet are part of the COVID-19 relief package Congress passed in December. Starting Wednesday, qualifying households will be able to apply for the benefit.

The $50 a month broadband subsidy promised as part of the COVID-19 relief package Congress passed in December will be made available to low-income individuals starting in two weeks.  The Federal Communication Commission said Thursday that households would be able to begin applying for the Emergency Broadband Benefit on May 12.
