IT hardware makers urge the government to allocate Rs 20,000 crore under the production-linked incentive scheme, to boost manufacturing of personal computers, tablets and servers in the country. The proposed amount of around Rs 7,000 crore is insignificant for global players to relocate their facilities to India, said industry body MAIT. The Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT), whose members include Apple, Dell, HP and Lenovo, wants the government to address various disabilities that the sector faces including improvement in export infrastructure to support growth under the PLI scheme. MAIT President Nitin Kunkolienker told PTI, We are looking for higher funds for the PLI scheme. For laptops, servers, etc, the government has just proposed Rs 7,325 crore.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has said the company s share in India is quite low relative to the size of the opportunity and setting up retail stores in the future in the country will be a great initiative. Apple launched the Apple Store online in India on September 23, offering Apple s full range of products and support directly to customers across the country for the first time. If you take India as an example, we doubled our business last quarter compared to the year ago quarter. But our absolute level of business there is still quite low relative to the size of the opportunity. And you can kind of take that and go around the world and find other markets that are like that as well, Cook said on Wednesday in the company s Q1 2021 results earnings call.
"If India has to grow at 9-10 per cent over a three-decade period, it must be open, it must be an integral part of the global economy. "It must be an integral part of the global supply chain," he said.
