New Delhi [India], May 21 (ANI): Mirwaiz Maulvi Mohammad Farooq Shah, the Mirwaiz (a hereditary position of religious authority) of Kashmir and Chairman of the All Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee, was assassinated on May 21, 1990, at his residence at Nageen, Srinagar, by terrorists affiliated to the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM).
Abdullah Bangroo, the commander, was subsequently killed. During his funeral procession, dozens of mourners died in CRPF firing in the Hawal area of Srinagar. Twelve years later, on May 21, 2002, unknown attackers killed another moderate leader Abdul Ghani Lone of the People s Conference, at a rally to mark the death anniversary of Mirwaiz Farooq.

Movement towards the Eidgah martyrs graveyard where the slain leaders – Farooq and Lone – are buried is not allowed, officials said.
Security was tightened in the Kashmir Valley on Friday due to the death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Farooq, father of Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Abdul Ghani Lone, father of Peoples Conference (PC) chief Sajad Lone.
"Hurriyat expresses strong resentment and regret that after announcing the release of Umar Farooq from a 20-month-long house detention since August 2019, government authorities went back on their decision," a spokesperson said.
Mirwaiz Umar was placed under house arrest on August 4, 2019, a day before Article 370 was abrogated and the state bifurcated into two union territories.Sour
