“Serbia ranks fifth in Europe in terms of women’s representation in senior public positions,” said UN Resident Coordinator in Serbia, Francoise Jacob, noting that women are still underrepresented in decision-making positions in local governments and the private sector.
Jacob pointed out that after Serbia’s parliamentary elections held last year, 39 per cent of the new is women, saying that is a big step towards achieving gender equality.
“Women are still underrepresented in decision-making bodies at the local level and in the private sector. Only 20 mayors and provincial presidents out of 165 are women,” Jacob told the first multi-sectoral event dedicated to gender equality issue, titled “The State of Equality in the Republic of Serbia”, initiated by the Ministry of Social Dialogue and Human and Minority Rights.
