PM Orbán in Stern: It Is Better for Us in the EU

The European Union, as Hungary understands it, is composed of sovereign nations, but some member states are trying to transfer more powers to Brussels and strengthen EU institutions, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in an interview published in the German magazine Stern on Thursday. “We, in Hungary, say that you can only be a good European, if you are a good Hungarian,” Orbán said, adding that based on their historical experience, Hungarians view a push toward “centralism” with concern. “We would not want to give up again the sovereignty and the rule of law achieved for central and eastern Europe 31 years ago,” he said.

Rule of Law, IIEA Event, 2 February 2021     I would like to thank the IIEA for the invitation to join this event and indeed for the work you have done in bringing it together in these challenging times.   The Institute has done an excellent job in adapting to the circumstances and I know that a huge amount of work goes on behind the scenes to bring these events together.   I would also like to thank Minister Varga for joining us to expand on Hungary’s position on the rule of law.   The pandemic has given us many challenges. Among the less serious but still important is the reduced frequency of our in-person engagements.

Hungary: We Must Fight for Our Digital Freedom Against Big Tech

29 Jan 2021 The Hungarian government has confirmed that it will legislate against Big Tech censorship online, declaring that “we must fight for our digital freedom!” Judit Varga, the Minister of Justice in Prime Minister Viktor Orbán national conservative government, lamented the fact that “today, anyone can be arbitrarily disconnected from online space without any kind of official, transparent or fair procedure, or the opportunity for redress.” “Bakers, hairdressers, pensioners, teachers, small and large enterprises, and state leaders too can all be disconnected”, Minister Varga said, declaring the status quo untenable in a press release seen by Breitbart London.
