JOHANNESBURG - Late minister in the Presidency, Jackson Mthembu has once again been described as a rare leader.
An official memorial service was held virtually on Monday after it was postponed on Saturday.
Deputy President, David Mabuza delivered the keynote tribute.
Mabuza described Mthembu as an outstanding son of the soil.
“This is not a passing of an individual, but a premature departure of a representative of the great generation, he said. The likes of Minister Mthembu come to pass this way once. In their way, they leave us the gifts of liberty and freedom.”
Mthembu died from COVID-19 complications and was laid to rest on Sunday in his hometown, eMalahleni in Mpumalanga.

Johannesburg - Sister Mavis Mahlakoane on Sunday described the 18-and-a-half hours she spent with Minister Jackson Mthembu at Milpark Hospital, where the minister succumbed to Covid-19-related complications on Thursday.
Mthembu, the Minister in the Presidency, was buried in his hometown of eMalahleni, Mpumalanga, on Sunday, in a state funeral attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who gave the eulogy, Deputy President David Mabuza and other government and ANC heavyweights.
Mahlakoane said Mthembu was admitted to hospital on Tuesday, January 19. The next day, she was assigned to room 3 where Mthembu was being treated. âMost nurses were scared to nurse him, saying thereâs a VIP patient.
Mabuza said Mthembu belonged to the well-known generation of freedom fighters, whose contribution to South Africaâs freedom and democracy deserved to be cherished for generations.
âMinister Mthembu symbolises a generation of freedom fighters, who came of political age after June 1976, to leave us footprints of a well-fought struggle against apartheid and a well-trodden journey to build the foundations of democracy in South Africa,â Mabuza said.
Mabuza said the late minister – who was a prominent feature in the governmentâs Covid-19 media briefings – had overcome a lot of personal adversities and tragic moments in his life, and used those experiences to inspire hope in others.
