Jessica Dickey's funny and philosophical play "The Rembrandt" is given not just a carefully balanced production but is augmented by its artful scenic design and some great pre-show pop music.
Hilary Bettis' "Queen of Basel," at TheaterWorks Hartford through Feb. 26, takes some cues from August Strindberg's classic anti-romance "Miss Julie" and fashions a modern drama about class and social injustice set in present-day Miami.
"Fun Home," the musical based on Alison Bechdel's "family tragicomic" graphic novel memoir, is at TheaterWorks Hartford through Oct. 30. The production unfortunately loses its plot and its balance in telling the tale of a young woman's coming-out at college contrasted with the problems of her closeted gay father.
"Secondo," a sequel to the hit "I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti," is at TheaterWorks Hartford. Reuniting the director, playwright and star of the first show, it's now 10 years later and Giulia Melucci is still in the kitchen, only this time she's talking about marriage rather than dating.
