David Morrell’s super middleweight title may not be particularly legit, but his next challenge certainly will be. The WBA today elevated the 23-year-old Cuban from “interim” to “world” champion, a largely meaningless distinction that nonetheless comes with orders to fight John Ryder.
As always, the pair have 30 days to negotiate.
Morrell (4-0, 3 KO) made his pro debut in August of 2019 and won the interim title just under a year later with a decision over unbeaten-but-untested Lennox Allen. Then came Mike Gavronski, whom Morrell demolished in three rounds just last month. He missed weight badly for that one, but still got to keep the belt when it was switched to a non-title bout.

David Morrell was to have defended his interim WBA title in the main event in Los Angeles Saturday night. But now, his fight has been reduced to a non-title 10-round affair after he missed weight Christmas afternoon.
Morrell, who now lives and trains in Minneapolis is only 3 – 0 as a professional and he was slated to battle Mike Gavronski for 12 rounds in the main event of the Premier Boxing Champions on Fox card Saturday night.
However, at the Friday afternoon weigh-in Morrell was more than 2 lb. over the 168 lb. limit, and the fight was then reduced to a 10-rounder.

He may only be 3-0, but 22 year old David Morell has already won the WBA super middleweight interim title. Now he’ll be fighting the 26-3-1 Mike Gavronski for the WBA’s Super Middleweight title (the WBA loves its titles) at LA’s Shrine Exposition Center Saturday night in a PBC on Fox broadcast. Morrell was last seen in the ring this past August when he bested the undefeated Lennox Allen by Unanimous Decision. Gavronski was last in action in September of 2019 when he knocked out Tommy Hughes in six. The Morrell-Gavronski match is a scheduled 12 rounder.
