After one of its police officers was arrested and charged with two felonies last week, the Bayard City Council voted unanimously Monday afternoon to keep police officer Cody Dove employed, but on paid administrative leave, until the conclusion of an internal investigation. The decision followed a 30-minute-long closed session.
“We are conducting an extensive internal investigation to disclose all known facts that are related to the incident, and appropriate measures will be taken once all that information has been disclosed,” said Bayard Police Chief Lee Alirez.

Gilbert Ray Madrid, a friend of Daniel Murillo, holds a handmade sign on Bullard Street in downtown Silver City on Tuesday. Several cars honked their horns in support of the sign’s message as they drove by. Madrid also planned a small protest today. Cody McDonald, who has been charged with Murillo’s murder, was released to house arrest last week on a $25,000 bond.
