Replaces former CIO Tim Spackman.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has appointed Mathew Smorhun as its new permanent chief information officer after losing its former tech chief last year.
iTnews can reveal Smorhun joined the department as its information management & technology division (IMD) first assistant secretary late last month following a three month search.
He replaces former CIO Tim Spackman, who left DFAT after six years last September to become Services Australia’s chief information security officer.
Spackman’s departure followed a widespread termination of IT contractors in July 2020 said to have resulted from a multi-million dollar budget blowout.
