Hinds praises Young on gas deal to restart Pt Lisas plants
Energy Minister Stuart Young
NATIONAL Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds on Wednesday praised his predecessor, now Energy Minister, Stuart Young for an interim agreement reached between the National Gas Company and the Proman Group on Tuesday,
It led to an immediate restart of Methanol Holdings Trinidad Ltd s (MHTL) M4 and M5000 methanol plants at Pt Lisas.
In a post on his Facebook page, Hinds referred to a statement on Tuesday from the Energy Ministry in which Young expressed pleasure at the restart of those plants. He recalled that the plants were recently closed after NGC and MTHL could not agree on a gas-supply contract to the satisfaction of both entities.

April has only just begun but already its been a bad month for clean energy in TT.
First came news that Methanol Holdings (Trinidad) Ltd (MHTL) – part of the Switzerland-based Proman group – has idled two of its plants.
This came after MHTL and the National Gas Company (NGC) failed to renew a contract for the continued supply of gas owing to a disagreement over price.
NCG cited confidentiality clauses and said it would honour other gas sales contracts with MHTL, while MHTL said it had reached “the absolute limit of our flexibility on contract price and the terms and conditions,” but would continue to engage with NGC and the government.

Failed NGC deal a ‘bitter blow’
Energy Minister Franklin Khan. -
THE shutdown of two of Methanol Holdings (Trinidad) Ltd (MHTL) plants on Thursday, after a failed gas supply agreement with the National Gas Company, has been described as a “bitter blow” to the energy industry by stakeholders. It is the latest in a series of halted operations among plants at the Pt Lisas Industrial Estate.
Former energy minister Kevin Ramnarine, who addressed the issue on his Facebook page, said the energy sector and the estate were in trouble after the closure of four methanol plants out of seven, and out of 20 other plants, seven have been shut down in the last few years.
