Live Green: Litter Free OC

47abc May 5, 2021 OCEAN CITY, MD– This past summer, Ocean City officials noticed more trash on the beach than in trash cans. Face masks and take out containers were some of the items littered across the town. To counter this rise in pollution, Ocean City is launching a new campaign, called Litter Free OC. Despite the pandemic, last summer many people flocked to Ocean City. Unfortunately the town realized visitors were leaving more than their footprints in the sand. As a result, the Mayor of Ocean City tasked the town’s Green Team to create the Litter Free OC campaign. “It got to a cracking point where we needed to do something. The Mayor asked about back in the day, when I was growing up, about “Every Litter Bit Hurts,” or “Give a Hoot, Don’t Pollute,” and “Don’t Be a Litter Bug.” We don’t hear a lot of this anymore. He wanted to bring that message back,” explained Gail Blazer, who is Ocean City’s Environmental Engineer.

Live Green: St Michaels Farmers Market

47abc April 28, 2021 ST. MICHAELS, MD– Over 400 people attend the St. Michaels Farmers Market every Saturday. This local foods market is one of the few producer only markets on the Eastern Shore. Meaning the vendors only sell what they grow or produce. This week on Live Green, I chatted with Devin Herlihy the Market Manager. On Saturday mornings, the St. Michaels Farmers Market is in full swing. You can find locals racing around the market to see what fresh, sustainably produced goods they can find. Locally grown mushrooms, meat, oysters and bread are just a few of the top items the market offers.

Live Green: Youth Environmental Action Summit

47abc April 7, 2021 SALISBURY, MD- The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, Salisbury University helps give students a platform to showcase their environmental work. It’s all part of the Youth Environmental Action Summit. The third annual event was recently held virtually – and this week on Live Green I caught up with two people involved to learn more. Greener fields and cleaner water, long-term environmental goals that can all start in the minds of students right here on the Lower Shore. The Youth Environmental Action Summit pushes students in grades 3 through 12 to research environmental issues in their communities all year long. They can then present those ideas at the one day summit. For Aurelio Giannitti, one of the event’s co-directors, the most important part is that the students are working together.

Live Green: Sprout - 47abc

47abc EASTON, MD– Five years ago, one couple’s idea of putting sustainable, organic and local foods into people’s refrigerators sprouted into a business on the Mid-Shore. Check out this week’s Live Green with Sprout. Based on the Mid-Shore, Sprout, which serves homestyle cooked meals made from local, sustainable ingredients, focuses on sourcing local to keep money in the community and support farmers. “When you’re sourcing local, you’re sourcing from community. You know where your product is coming from. You know where your money is being spent. You know where it’s being invested. It’s very important to us for consumers to know where their food is coming from and how it is being handled,” said Ryan Groll.
