Thursday, 6 May 2021, 5:28 am 05/05/2021, Bangkok, Thailand – The 36th Session of the Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission (APFIC) has wrapped up the first of its three-day biennial session, convened in its first all-virtual format, amid ongoing uncertainties created within fishery-food supply chains caused by the global pandemic. In opening the Commission Session, the Director-General of the Department of Fisheries of the Royal Thai Government noted that the onset of COVID-19 had placed a tremendous impact on the world s socio-economic situation in all regions, in particular, the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. “The whole supply chain from farms or nets to plate is seriously affected,” said Mesak Pakdeekong.

Thai seafood to be packaged with Covid-safe mark

December 27, 2020 Mesak Pakdeekong, director-general of the Fisheries Department, chomps on a boiled shrimp to promote the safety of Thai seafood. The Nation/Asia News Network From Dec 26, two standards will certify Thai seafood and aquatic products are free from Covid-19 contamination. The move by the Fisheries Department is aimed at building confidence in Thai fisheries produce both domestically and in neighbouring countries. So far, 60 exporters have applied for the new safety certification. Department chief Mesak Pakdeekong said the Covid-19 outbreak in Samut Sakhon s central shrimp market had spread to other areas, sparking public alarm over food safety and threatening livelihoods in the fisheries industry.
