Estrella Weikel, a student at Mesa Vista High School in Ojo Caliente, grew up gardening. To her, clean water and healthy land weren’t abstractions – they were visible necessities. Her family had gardens and crops at home, while her father worked in construction and sold firewood. That lifestyle, she says, where she spent so much time outdoors with dirt under her fingernails, “helped me learn that there are other things in life than sitting around and not caring about the environment. It helps me in my life because I think of ways to make our environment and lifestyle better.”

ESPAÑOLA The LANL Foundation has announced a new scholarship – a testament to the remarkable legacy of dedicated educators Nelson O. and Esperanza Baca Gonzales to the young people of Northern New Mexico.
The Nelson O. and Esperanza Baca Gonzales Scholarship, established by Nelson to honor his late wife, her family, and to encourage and inspire a new generation as a $100,000 endowment with the LANL Foundation, will provide scholarships in perpetuity for students from Mesa Vista High School and then Española Valley High School students pursuing a bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree or trade certification.
