in britain and france, germany, across europe, to this dizzying display of diplomacy by donald trump, first getting out of the iran deal and then moving forward as quickly as possible. on a north korea summit. there s this kind of weird position we re in where either all of this is going to be a train wreck with terrifying and potentially violent consequences. or either iran or north korea works and donald trump really is a candidate for the nobel peace prize, and both of those are potentially possible. i think there is some concern about donald trump s personality going to these negotiations with north korea. i don t know what you think about this, victor cha. those scenes last night of the president celebrating the return of these hostages, he s clearly very keen to get a win out of this. would you be concerned he might go into the negotiations with too much desire to get a win? and paradoxically, that might
to break last night. he said, pick up the pace of this trial or else this merger deal could be in serious jeopardy. now, this case has really been moving at a glacial pace. we re on day five and we only heard from three complete witnesses. the fourth witness is on the stand right now, getting questioned by government attorneys. the judge initially projected this case would last six to eight weeks. but both sides combined have about 30 witnesses. so if you do the math on this, that would extend this case well beyond that 6 to 8 weeks initially projected. and here s why it matters. both of these parties, at&t and time warner, they are racing against a june 21st deadline, when the merger deal expires and both parties could walk away from this case if that happened. at&t would be on the line for $500 million breakup payout to time warner. so really here s the timeline of how this case has been going. it was in october of 2016 that this merger deal was announced between time warner and at&t
we re a year and a half past when that merger deal was announced. then you go back to november of 2017, that s when the department of justice after a lengthy review decided that it would in fact sue to block this deal. then, of course, the trial began in march, about march 22nd, and here we are looking at this june 21st deadline that this merger deal needs to go through by if it does go if it does in fact go through at all. they have already extended that merger deadline deal already once, it was up in march. but really the judge in this case saying that a lot of these witnesses are redundant, he s urged both parties, the government as well as at&t s lawyers to go back and look at their witnesses. but, john, the government, this is the big case for them, they haven t tried a vertical merger case in more than 40 years, there are a lot of technical details here to work out in what has become really this antitrust trial of the century, but the judge putting out that stern warning, we ll
antitrust trial between at&t and the department of justice is set to resume p. what can we expected to as both sides make the case about the proposed merger deal with time warner which of course owns cnn. let s bring in cnn politics media and business reporter hadask gold and brian stelter. what are we looking for? today we ll hear from more witnesses including our boss john martin and he s actually one of the government witnesses which means he ll probably be what s called a hostile direct which means it is not going to be the typical witness from a certain side where there are a little bit more friendlier and on the same terms. that s going to be an interesting witness today. we re also expecting in the near future other witnesses such as representatives from youtube as well as from sling tv, the new over-the-top services that people are using. they ll try to make the case that this merger will hurt them whereas at&t will try to make
