What he wasn’t prepared for, he said, was the way VA staff treated him. Employees at the front desk were rude, he said. They told him they would call him back but didn’t. “They re not professional, the people there,” Harris said. His impression was not unique. According to surveys of inpatient experience, the Memphis VA Medical Center rated worse, on average, than other hospitals in Tennessee and nationwide on every measure.

In Memphis and Shelby County, the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 (standing for coronavirus disease 2019 ) continues to run its course as the rate of vaccinations slow. As vaccinations continue and cases remain low, local governments have gradually lifted pandemic restrictions. The latest health directive, which went into effect midnight May 15, further loosened restrictions on businesses and significantly scaled back the local mask mandate, only requiring those who are vaccinated to wear masks on public transit or in locations such as businesses that require masks and have posted signage saying it is required.
