(KMIZ) The University of Missouri s 2021 graduation and the True/False Film Festival are bringing more people to Columbia this weekend, resulting in more traffic for businesses. Mizzou commencements began yesterday honoring 5,547 students through a series of events continuing into next weekend. Each graduate was given six tickets to give to friends and family for the events. This means an additional 33,282 people could be visiting the area. Judy Milliano is among those graduates that has welcomed her family to the area for this weekend. With all the people out it s starting to feel like the old Columbia, said Milliano.

COLUMBIA - This weekend is the first of two graduation weekends for 2021 University of Missouri graduates. Not only is graduation weekend a cause to celebrate for families, but with an influx of visitors the tourism industry may be celebrating too. Megan McConachie, strategic communications manager at Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau, says the travel and tourism industry has more impact on the city than one may think. The travel and tourism industry actually touches a lot of corners of our community, McConachie said, Of course you have hotels, you have restaurants, shops, everything from those that kind of come to mind pretty easily, to gas stations and big box stores.

Columbia tourism officials expect 'economic boost' from True/False Film Festival amid pandemic

KMIZ COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) The annual True/False Film Festival in Columbia starts Wednesday, and the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau expects it to be the economic boost Columbia needs as the pandemic winds on. Bureau spokeswoman Megan McConachie said festival capacity is not as large as it was before the pandemic. However, she still expects a good amount of people to come use hotels, shop in stores and eat at local restaurants. It s still going to definitely give our town an economic boost as we continue to recover from the pandemic, McConachie said. Matt McGee, owner of On the Rocks in downtown Columbia, said he s not sure what impact this years festival will have on businesses downtown.
