In 2012, the UN General Assembly designated February 6th as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) - a clear violation of women’s and girls’ health and human rights. In 1997, the WHO, UNICEF and UNFPA together issued a joint statement against FGM. By 2030 the UNFPA estimates that an additional 2 million girls will be at risk of being subjected to female genital mutilation. Despite years of legal and policy work at global, national and local levels, the prevalence of FGM has increased. The WHO recognizes four types of FGM, which include clitoridectomy, infibulation and other harmful procedures undertaken on female genitalia, for a non-medical purpose. FGM or female genital cutting – FGC - have no known health benefits. FGM is painful and traumatic while the removal or damage to healthy, normal genital tissue interferes with the natural functioning of the body with immediate and long-term health consequences.
