Former students look to rename James Madison Memorial High School after Darlene M Hancock

Former students look to rename James Madison Memorial High School after Darlene M. Hancock     MADISON, WI (365 Media Foundation, Inc) The late Darlene Hancock was the first African-American female principal for the Madison Metropolitan School District, a champion for education, an advocate for all children and a leader in the Madison community for decades. Now, some of her former students are hoping that when James Madison Memorial High School is renamed, it will be after her. “There have been so many great candidates that have been brought forward for the potential renaming of Madison Memorial High School, but the reason why Mrs. Hancock should be in consideration, too, is that she didn’t just walk the walk, she talked the talk in terms of education and providing opportunities for children that extended well beyond her days as principal and are still affecting the lives of young people everywhere,” Anthony Brown Jr. tells Madison365.

UW Health partners with community orgs to vaccinate vulnerable populations     MADISON, WI (365 Media Foundation, Inc) To help equitably vaccinate the public against COVID-19, UW Health is partnering with community organizations serving communities of color for population-specific vaccination clinics, the health system announced Tuesday. On Monday, the health system partnered with The Wisconsin Latino Chamber of Commerce to vaccinate almost 200 essential workers in Dane County. “It was extremely successful,” said Shiva Bidar-Sielaff, vice president and chief diversity officer, UW Health. Bidar-Sielaff said in an interview Tuesday that COVID-19 has disproportionately affected communities of color, and communities of color are least likely to be vaccinated.

In an interview for the Madison365 daily news podcast It’s Only 10 Minutes, Kalvin Barrett said he wants the department to stay close with the community without over-policing. Barrett, 39, was appointed Friday by Governor Tony Evers to replace Sheriff Dave Mahoney, who will retire May 8.
