Jersey City school reopening, Part 2: The few McNair seniors in classrooms ask 'where is everyone else?'

Jersey City school reopening, Part 2: The few McNair seniors in classrooms ask ‘where is everyone else?’ Updated May 10, 2021; Facebook Share Raheeq Ibrahim said she felt like a freshman all over again Monday, trying to find her classes with just weeks left in senior year at McNair Academic High School. The 18-year-old said returning in person felt almost unnatural after 14 months of remote learning because of the coronavirus pandemic. Add into the mix teachers responding simultaneously to students online and in the classroom, and it made for a strange, unsettling day. “You don’t get that same feeling in class,” Ibrahim said of her classmates who remained in virtual learning. “You can’t turn to anybody and start laughing at a joke or anything. It’s just you and the teacher, you can’t even do anything besides work.”

Jersey City teachers excited, nervous as they return to classrooms for first time in over a year

Jersey City teachers excited, nervous as they return to classrooms for first time in over a year Updated Apr 15, 2021; 18 Facebook Share For the first time in more than a year, Jersey City school teachers returned to their schools Thursday to set up classrooms for students to make their long-awaited return on April 26. The school district, which serves roughly 30,000 students, has begun the final countdown for reopening schools by calling in every single teacher for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic back in March 2020. Teachers returned to make sure all technology works, all supplies like personal protective equipment are available, and to get a handle on the new format for how schools will operate when they open. Meanwhile, students spent Thursday working on scheduled assignments left by their teachers.
