in prison. travis mcmichael, his father gregory, and their neighbor roddy bryan, were convicted of felony murder. they had chased mr arbery while he was jogging, before he was shot to death. their defence had claimed they feared he was planning to commit a crime. the mcmichaels will spend life in prison without the possibility of parole. roddy bryan will serve life but does have the possibility of parole. here s georgia superior court judge timothy walmsley outlining some of the evidence from the trial. there s a frame where i believe ahmaud arbery, it looks to be if he s 20 yards out, that may be close 30 yards out. it s the frame of travis mcmichael lifting the shotgun to fire at ahmaud arbery. and you watch that with context and when i say context , after hearing the evidence in this case and thinking
welcome back to the program. the three white men who murdered ahmaud arbery were sentenced to life in prison friday with two having no chance of parole. the 25-year-old black man was jogging in a south georgia neighborhood when the three men gave chase and shot him in february of 2020. more now from cnn s ryan young. today the deficits defendants are being held accountable reporter: two of the three men convicted of killing ahmaud arbery sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in prison, life without the possibilitier of parole. after ahmaud arbery fell, the mcmichaels turned their backs to a disturbing image, and they walked away. this was a killing. it was callus reporter: william bryan jr. sentenced to serve life with the possibility of parole after 30
of our life. we will never see ahmaud again. so i feel they should stay behind them bars rest of their life because they didn t give him a chance. the loss of ahmaud has devastated me and my family. so i m asking that the men that killed him be given the maximum sentence available to the court. reporter: last november the mcmichaels and bryan were convicted of murder after chasing 25-year-old ahmaud arbery in their vehicles while he jogged in the neighborhood killing him after they said they thought they see arbery inside an unfinished home on february 23rd, 2020. it took 2.5 months before arrests were made after video bryan took of the murder was released and went viral. these three men face additional federal charges. that case is scheduled to be heard in february. so it s not over for them just yet. a lot of people are paying attention to this, especially because the prosecutor who was originally involved in this case faces her own set of charges
sentencing hearing for the three men convicted of killing his son. that hearing is still under way at a courtroom in georgia. travis mcmichael, gregory mcmichael, and william roddy bryan chased and murdered arbery. joining me now is nbc news correspondent catie beck and former federal prosecutor paul butler. catie, what was it like in court today? katy, there has been a lot of emotional testimony from arbery s mother and father, describing the great loss of their son and saying they are there to be the voice he could not be for himself, making very clear they feel the mcmichaels targeted him because they didn t
in the state court, the prosecutors made a calculated decision to downplay the issue of race. we know there was an issue about the confederate flag license plate that the mcmichaels had and the judge ruled that plate could come into evidence but the prosecutors made a tactical decision on not to introduce that into evidence. we know there is social media posts of travis mcmichael, where he s used racial slurs and made other derogatory remarks with respect to people of color, all of that evidence will be front and center in the federal hate crime trial because that trial is all about the three defendants in this case targeting ahmaud arbery because of his race. and, yes, his sister, i think, bringing up those images and juxtaposing the beauty of blackness versus the curse of blackness, which is what these three defendants saw, they saw a black man and they saw that as a physical threat, which is so often the case, in our society, given how pervasive racism is.
