Commencement for the 200 members in the MHS Class of 2021 is set for 10 a.m. May 22 at Hook Eales Stadium as previously scheduled. But school officials said those plans could change with rain in the forecast and with the district s mask policy going back into effect.

Voters elect Gronwald to McAlester school board

Voters elected Rachel Gronwald to another term on the McAlester Public Schools Board of Education. The McAlester small business owner received 227 votes to 123 votes for challenger Sophia Collins-West as MPS voters picked Gronwald to remain in the school board No. 1 office during the April 6 elections. After the unofficial votes were announced Tuesday night, Gronwald thanked voters and shared her hope to move forward. “I’m super grateful for the time that I’ve been able to serve on the school board and I’m really excited to continue to move forward past the pandemic era,” Gronwald said. Gronwald graduated from McAlester High School in 2006 and went to the University of Arkansas before returning to McAlester nearly a decade ago with her husband, Adam, who is a 2007 MHS graduate. The two have children attending McAlester schools and are small business owners.

Ruth Rogers told McAlester Public Schools Board of Education members during Monday’s meeting that 23 teachers had to quarantine that day — bringing district totals to 33 staff members and 171 students out due to COVID-19. “And we have two new cases to contact trace just since I’ve been here tonight,” Rogers told board members, who later voted to approve several precautionary measures.

Two races loom as candidates file for school board seats

In another race, two candidates also filed for an open seat in the Haywood School District. Both Rachel Elizabeth Gronwald and Sophie Collins-West filed for Office No. 1 on the McAlester Public Schools Board of Education, for a five-year term in office. In the Haywood School District, both Carolyn Colley and Colton Snead filed for a three-year term in Office No. 2. The two sets of candidates in the McAlester and Haywood school districts are set to face each other in their respective races during the General Election on April 6, 2021.
