For columnist Brannavan Gnanalingam, nothing beats watching our New Zealand cricket team play at the moment, with captain Kane Williamson leading the charge to glory here in the second test against Pakistan in Christchurch on January 5.
OPINION: When I was 5, we had to tell the class what we wanted to be when we grew up. I said, “Cricket player,” even though I had no idea what that was. A year later though, we stopped class to watch New Zealand beat Australia at Basin Reserve. John Wright scored a fourth innings hundred, which I maintain is one of New Zealand’s most underrated test innings. I was hooked. I stayed up to watch Richard Hadlee’s last series in England. And then there was Martin Crowe’s 299, and, of course, the 1992 Cricket World Cup when New Zealand agonisingly lost in the semifinals. My love even lasted through the dark days of the mid-1990s.

Sprinting into position, Wellington s Logan van Beek threw his body toward the ball and stuck out a hopeful hand. It had been struck cleanly off the bat of the Northern Knights No 7 Brett Hampton, and the chances of van Beek claiming the catch were slim.
But it was one of those days for the Wellington Firebirds. Van Beek threw his hand out, and it stuck, leaving commentators, fans and the fielder in disbelief.
