ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. Crews completed cutting operations and separated section three from the remainder of the Golden Ray wreck on Thursday morning.
Pollution response teams also helped mitigate an oil spill near the wreck site that happened during the cutting and removal of section three.
The removal efforts continue after the capsized Golden Ray cargo ship caught on fire back in May. The ship has been stuck in the water since it capsized in 2019.

The salvage and wreck removal of the capsized Golden Ray will continue for “several more months” in St. Simons Sound, Georgia, now more than a year and half since the car carrier ran aground with more than 4,000 vehicles inside.
The St. Simons Sound Incident Response Unified Command updated the media on the extended operation on Monday after reporting the successful separation of “Section Seven” over the weekend. Section Seven proved to be the most difficult section to cut to date due to reinforced steel surrounding the ship’s engine room.
Wreck removal personnel are now preparing the section for lifting operations by removing vehicles, moveable decks and sediment similar to earlier weight-shedding operations. BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The demolition of an overturned cargo ship in the St. Simons Sound is halfway done after a fourth section of the Golden Ray was sliced, separated and lifted from the wreck.
After the major milestone was reached, News4Jax on Monday went out on a boat with the St. Simons Sound Incident Unified Command to learn more about the removal process up close. Lifejackets were available for every passenger aboard in the event of an emergency.
