Gravenhurst s Mayor says confusion might have been a factor in incident at local skatepark

SHARE ON: A screencapture of the video (Photo credit: @brodieohare on Instagram) “It’s certainly concerning,” Gravenhurst Mayor Paul Kelly says of the controversial video circulating on social media of a confrontation between a Bracebridge OPP officer and a youth at a skatepark in Gravenhurst.  “There were signs that were posted, apparently, by staff saying that (the park) was closed, but apparently they got torn down,” he tells the MyMuskokaNow.com newsroom. Kelly says he was advised by a resident of the torn-down signs and later confirmed with Gravenhurst’s Public Works Department that they had put them up over the weekend. “I do believe there was probably some confusion,” he adds.

Gravenhurst s Fire Department has selected new Fire Chief

Bracebridge’s Deputy Fire Chief Jared Cayley is getting a promotion. He has been selected as the new Fire Chief for the Town of Gravenhurst. His first day will be on May 3rd, while a by-law confirming his appointment will be discussed by council two weeks later on the 18th. “To have been given the honour to lead such a fantastic team of fire service professionals is the realization of a lifelong dream,” Cayley says. “I cannot wait to begin to get to work with them to serve the residents and visitors of the Town of Gravenhurst.” Cayley takes over the reins as Fire Chief from Brad Bigrigg who has served as the Interim Chief since Larry Brassard retired from his post on January 15th. Cayley has worked with the Town of Bracebridge for a decade in various roles including Training Officer and Community Emergency Management Coordinator, along with his officer current position of Deputy Fire Chief. Mobile vaccination clinics to travel throughout Muskoka; top doctor says new permanent locations unlikely

SHARE ON: The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner (Photo taken on Zoom) The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has announced pop-up vaccination clinics will be established in Gravenhurst, Muskoka Lakes and the Townships of Lake of Bays and Georgian Bay. “I am aware of concerns raised regarding access to COVID-19 vaccination in the District of Muskoka, and a desire for vaccination clinics to be established in addition to the two present locations in Huntsville and Bracebridge,” SMDHU’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner said in a letter. “These clinic locations were chosen with careful consideration by a regional planning table of representatives from the area municipalities within the District of Muskoka, as well as representation from both the Cottage Country Family Health Team and Algonquin Family Health Teams, the Muskoka Algonquin Health Care, and from the Muskoka and Area Ontario Health Team.”

Local union President calling on the community to save the Ontario Fire College from closing

SHARE ON: Photo credit: Mathew Reisler With the Ontario Fire College in Gravenhurst set to be decommissioned on March 31st, the President of the union that represents the workers is calling on the community to help save the facility. Chris McConnell is the President of Ontario Public Service Employees Union Local 317 that represents the 20 workers at the facility. “The local has taken the steps to ensure that everybody knows what’s at stake here,” he tells the MyMuskokaNow.com newsroom. He says that the College provides full-time stable work in a community where those opportunities aren’t plentiful. McConnell says having stable employment is “paramount” to the stability of any community.
