Underwood: Vaccination rates hard to understand

It’s hard to understand the numbers of those who have not been vaccinated despite all of the efforts to get the island community there. Cars and cash have been given. Requirements have been established. Messages from nearly every important person have been distributed. But the entire community is not there. Moreover, different segments of the community offer disproportionate rates of vaccination. The most startling figure is that only 43% of CHamorus have been vaccinated. Filipinos are at 71%. At the other end, Chuukese are at 30%. Palauans are at 48% and the Yapese are at 64%. No statistics have been released on Caucasians. Come to think of it, I can’t remember a single release where they are ever mentioned.

Vaccine rates lowest among CHamorus, regional migrants

Vaccine rates lowest among CHamorus, regional migrants By Steve Limtiaco Although the island’s overall vaccination rate is high, it’s very low among two ethnic groups CHamorus and people from the Federated States of Micronesia  said Dr. Hoa Nguyen, chairman of the governor’s Physicians Advisory Group. The island is nearing the governor’s goal of fully vaccinating 80% of adults by July 21, with more than 76% vaccinated. But Nguyen said the vaccination rate for CHamorus is only about 20%, and the vaccination rate for the island’s FSM community is “somewhere in the teens.” “Everyone is scratching their head right now on how to approach the (CHamoru) population,” Nguyen said.
